Notes and care.

Tillandsia (also known as "daughter of the air") is a plant that belongs to the great Bromeliads family and has very particular characteristics, which distinguishes it well in this wide panorama. Thanks to the peculiar characteristics of the leaves (thorny or without thorns, pubescent or flaky, linear, lanceolate or filiform) and thanks also to the anatomical and physiological characteristics of the plant itself, the Tillandsia genus is able to adapt perfectly to any type of environment.

They are not plants that fear particularly adverse climatic conditions: they are able, for example, to adapt perfectly to even the driest and driest climates, thanks to the leaves, which manage to retain moisture directly from the atmosphere. This means that the adaptability, even as regards the terrain, is truly incredible.

Tillandsia is native to the American continent: present both in the central belt of the New Continent, and in the southernmost areas of Latin America, where the tropical climate reigns. Precisely in these areas there are many species of Tillandsia, which precisely feed on environmental humidity.

They are not only very strong and resistant plants, but also very beautiful and that always manage to get noticed: the rosette-shaped leaves of some species form a large bowl (rainwater is collected here), while the flowers appear throughout their beauty by touching very different shades of color depending on the species. Each fruit contains three winged seeds in its capsule.

Flowering Tillandsia

The flowering period varies depending on the species, but generally the plants belonging to the Tillandsia genus bloom in late summer and early autumn. A flowering that in any case (for each species) is decidedly spectacular and offers truly enchanting color effects. The bright colors of the flowers stand out well among the thin elongated leaves with more subtle colors. Some species emanate a pleasant perfume, like theTillandsia usneoides.

A tip: at the end of flowering remove the stem, so as to lighten the plant.

Tillandsia: tips for growing

At the beginning of this article, we said that these plants are native to tropical and sub-tropical forests, where the climate is very different from that of our continent and especially from our country.

So, is it difficult to grow them in Italy? No, just a few precautions are enough to enjoy a unique show that only these plants can give. In fact, they are very resistant plants, which are well suited to having climates, but still need to be little help: all we have to do is respect Mother Nature and collaborate.

As a rule, the greener plants and more delicate leaves require less sun and more humidity and tend to thrive in a cool environment. The species from stiffer and more gray leaves they prefer more light and are usually from warmer areas.

Cultivation in pots

In general (then it depends on the individual species) Tillandsia is a plant that feels comfortable in the closed spaces of homes: ideal for giving that extra touch of color and perfect for being placed alongside other plants, in order to create a composition of taste.

A clarification is needed: pot cultivation can take place limited to Tillandsia lindeliana is cyanea, for which the same cultivation directives relating to orchids. This does not mean that the other species are not suitable for adorning domestic environments, but simply can be placed on any container or support, and it is absolutely not possible to speak of repotting.

In fact, a small drop of mastic for plants (or vinyl glue) is enough to firmly anchor the plant to the chosen support (it could also be the trunk of another large plant, for example the Dracena).

Avoid fixing plants on limestone such as travertine which, melting with the waterings, could lead to the formation of incrustations on the trichomes, damaging them. Better to use branches with cork bark, or light wood slats such as fir. Avoid fixing the base of the plant with thermal glue, or substances such as silicone containing solvents that could burn the base itself.

If you really want to resort to gluing, better do it at the base of a leaf, not obstructing the base of the plant and using non-toxic glues. It would be better to fix the plant to the support with ties, twine perhaps by placing sphagnum between the base of the plant and the support, to facilitate the rooting of the plant. You can then cover the point where it is glued with moss or lichen.

The ideal would be to aim to recreate the conditions most similar to those of its natural environment, aiming to create the conditions for the plant to be stimulated to fix itself autonomously with its roots to the support. Tillandsia is an epiphytic plant that uses its roots only to firmly anchor itself to different surfaces.

Tip: place the Tillandsia in an environment very bright and where it is possible circulate the air constantly. Better to avoid corridors (usually dark) and the kitchen (where there are greasy vapors), better to prefer the bathroom and other well-lit rooms, preferably near a window.

Normally their bearing is upwards, but the vision of plants cannot be excluded upside down. Tillandsia can safely live in this position, but it is advisable to maintain its natural upright position.

Cultivation in the garden

Tillandsia is a plant that is well suited to be grown outdoors in most Italian areas, but with the only foresight to place it in fairly bright and sheltered areas. Close to other plants, perhaps large in size, it is the best choice. Even in areas of partial shade they will be able to grow without any particular problems.
The ideal is to place it under trees. Outdoors, watering must be rare, because it manages to take the humidity of the night, rainwater and even nutrients from the bark to which it is attached.

Temperature

Some species are able to resist even temperatures that touch 0 (zero) degrees, but in general the limit temperature for Tillandsia is around 6/8 degrees. There are no problems in the summer months, since they are plants that resist very well to high temperatures.

Light

For both indoor and outdoor cultivation, light is a factor of fundamental importance for these plants: only with correct exposure to sunlight will it be possible to see a healthy and robust plant grow capable of giving wonderful blooms.

At home: the ideal position is behind glass of a large window, giving the plant the opportunity to capture a large amount of light.

Outdoors: very bright areas, but never in direct contact with sunlight. South-east exposure is the best choice.

Topsoil

Epiphytic plants known as "Aerial plants": the soil will certainly not be a problem: Tillandsia does not need particular soil, or better it doesn't need soil.
Lives holding on to other plants or supports of various kinds (when grown indoors) and feeds on the trichomes of the thin leaves.

watering

During the hottest months of the year it is necessary to carry out frequent and constant watering (this also during the other periods of the year when the plant is in particularly dry domestic environments). Nebulizing water (optimal pH 4.5-6.5) directly on the plant is the best way to correctly complete this operation.

However, in extreme cases of serious danger to the plant, watering by immersion can be carried out. No, the plant must not be detached and immersed in a large container, but it is sufficient to completely wet the plant with water at room temperature (an operation that can also be done with a bottle, with the only foresight not to let the water drop with the impetus of a waterfall).

In winter, the number of sprinkler irrigations may drop in number, but they must always be done regularly.

In species with a sump, watering can take place by filling the same.

For plants located outside, unless they are in particularly dry areas, very few irrigations are necessary, since Tillandsia is able to effectively capture the humidity of the night and rainwater and equally effectively preserve them.
